Taos New Mexico- On your bucket list?

I always love seeing the national and international news post stories about the wonder and beauty that is Taos. If you have been here, you know. If you haven't...what are you waiting for? The Taos mention is an excerpt from The Huffington Post's article, Bucket List Places You Need To See In The Next Decade. Click on the link for the other nine places to visit.

Taos, New Mexico

Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico is so much more than just a ski mountain. Rugged and remote, Taos is famous for its breathtaking scenery and the "legendary light" that has inspired artists like Georgia O'Keeffe. Taos has always had a sort of mystique about it. In 2013, billionaire Louis Bacon bought the mountain from its founders the Blake family, promising this lovably weathered mountain would get a "much-needed shot in the arm," as The New York Times put it. This year, a chair lift opened to Kachina Peak, which had previously only been accessible by a hike. Thirty-five acres of new tree skiing opened, too, and the village's ski lodge also got an upgrade. Ski Taos in the next 10 years to take advantage of these new developments, and also to experience the unique charm of the place while it lasts.

Ana Chavez, creator of the "Cold as a Witch's Tit" bra
I had the most lovely day today. After church at St James Episcopal, a group of girlfriends and I met for brunch and then the matinee performance of the wonderful play "Cups".

The description follows, but just let me tell you I literally laughed, cried and loved every minute. And you must arrive in time to see the Bralapalooza Fashion Show, a collection of handcrafted artistic fantasy bras with names such as "horn of plenty", "titty, titty, bang, bang", "cold as a witch's tit" or "teddy pair" to name just a few. These exquisite creations are included in a silent auction with proceeds going to cancer support at Holy Cross Hospital. Want to see the bras? Check out the Taos Onstage Facebook page by clicking here.

Remaining dates for "Cups":  Oct 31st, Nov 1 and Nov 2. I highly recommend this play...Enjoy!

Cups

by Joni Sheram
A funny, poignant and uplifting play, Cups traces the milestones in a woman’s life through her bras. Audience members, both female and male, will be able to relate to Nora, the insecure girl who becomes a young mother, a woman betrayed, a cancer survivor. The bras are a perfect metaphor for the changing events that the past few generations have experienced.
The play, though not autobiographical, was an homage to her mother and grandmother.
Bob Bow of the Denver Post said of the play "While this may seem like a 'girls only' show, it isn't. The depth of Sheram's writing transcends gender.”
“Cups” will be among many of the activities during Breast Cancer Awareness month,  and a portion of the proceeds will go to the cancer support services sponsored by Holy Cross Hospital.
In Mural Room at Old County Courthouse
Performance dates:
Oct. 23-26; Oct. 30-31, Nov. 1-2
Thurs.-Sat. 7:30 p.m., Sun. 2 p.m.

World's Best Ski Towns?

courtesy National Geographic , Photograph by Bud Force, Aurora

National Geographic just created their "Top 25 List of Best Ski Towns in the World".  Of course Taos made the list!
"Best For: Art-loving skiers and boarders with a taste for steep runs and green chilies
In the world of classic ski towns, Taos is a unique gem. Originally an ancient, high-desert pueblo at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico, the city was populated in the early 20th century by artists and writers who were attracted to the Native American and Hispanic culture, stunning natural surroundings, and the region’s 300 annual days of crystalline sunshine. In 1955, a German immigrant named Ernie Blake founded Taos Ski Valley 18 miles outside of town in a narrow valley engulfed by precipitous peaks. Today, the Swiss-style chalets at the area’s base exude an old-time European character while the town itself feels like a funky Southwestern artist’s colony."  cont.
In my opinion we are #1.  Read the full story here

We're #6! We're #6!

I love posting articles written about Taos, wonderful Taos. Money Journal just came out with their "10 most liked US Cities" list and we ranked sixth.  Forgetting the fact that we are actually a town....not a city...this is pretty cool.  Major cities like Seattle, Portland Oregon, Boston and New York City made the list and then there is Taos.  How cool is that?

The magazine wrote:

"6- Taos, New Mexico – This historic Spanish outpost is still one of America’s most popular towns. Long a hub for artists and counterculture types, this small city now hosts a world class music festival and attracts visitors from all over the world. Taos might be America’s most popular small city."

You can read the rest of the article by clicking here.

We were also featured in a Forbes article titled "America's Prettiest Towns".  This time we were third out of twenty.  Forbes said:

"Taos, a stunningly beautiful mountain community located just north of Santa Fe, has earned a reputation for one of the country’s most captivating small towns. Although it is now known as a winter playground for its world-class skiing, and year-round getaway for the rich and famous, Taos retains its small-town feel while increasingly becoming an artistic hub. Santa Fe’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City has no doubt led to some spillover, but Taos’ beauty would attract artists despite outside influences. Majestic mountains, the kind of blue sky you only get at higher elevations (almost 7,000 feet – a good 1,800 or so feet higher than Denver and its “mile-high” moniker), and the desert climate all add to the traditional, Santa-Fe architectural style of the town’s center. The neighboring Taos Pueblo is a popular tourist destination and a designated National Historic Landmark."

You can read the rest of the article by clicking here.
I, of course, agree with every point except that we attract all kinds of people from all walks of life...not just the aforementioned "rich and famous".  If you live here you know how amazing Taos is.  If you have not visited yet, what are you waiting for?

Thank you Martha Stewart, We love Taos too!

courtesy taos ski valley
I received my copy of the January edition for Martha Stewart Living magazine a few weeks ago but just had a chance to peruse this morning.  Paging through the stories about New Year's resolutions, cooking with citrus, organizing, winter gardening and the contents of Martha's makeup bag, I found an article describing the tiny ski town of Woodstock, Vermont, pop. 900.  Truly beautiful.  Imagine my delight when, at the end of the piece, there was a sidebar entitled:

"you'll also like... Here are four more small-sized laid back, well rounded ski towns that will appeal to every member (skiing or otherwise) of your travel party.

Where  Taos, New Mexico
Why      Two words:  perfect weather.  Taos gets an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, and if you go in spring, chances are high that you'll find yourself skiing in a light jacket under bright blue skies."

Other towns listed are Lake Placid, New York;  Bend, Oregon and Truckee, California.  (And my totally biased view is that the attributes they assign to these three towns are also here in Taos).

Taos Ski Valley is a must for both experienced and beginning skiers.  Also try Sipapu, Red River and Angel Fire resorts. We are going cross country skiing next week at Enchanted Forest ...and they have 5k of dog trails so Mosey can come too.  Enchanted Forest also has over 15km of exclusive snowshoeing trails in addition to their 30-plus km of cross country ski trails which are snowshoe friendly.   We plan to spend a lot of time this winter and spring at the ski resorts.  You should come visit Taos and join us!  Martha would....

Forbes Magazine Loves Taos

I love it when magazines report on Taos!  Thanks Forbes...I agree with all of your suggestions.

" Can driving be poetry? It can on a scenic and spectacular drive through New Mexico. Writer and Fathom contributor Kate Donnelly goes for a spin. \

TAOS, New Mexico – During my week in Santa Fe, I opt for a 56-mile day trip to Taos (with my adventurous mom in the driver’s seat). Taos is America’s spiritual and historical past. Great artists and thinkers (Georgia O’Keefe, Ansel Adams, Carl Jung) have all passed through. So should you.
The road to take? The mountainous, winding High Road, of course, which involves a few stops:"
