Taos, New Mexico is one of the most beautiful, interesting, creative and challenging places in the world. Amazing art; delicious, local, organic food and wonderful outdoor activities...skiing in the Winter; hiking, fishing, gardening and white water rafting in the Summer. I moved here on October 17th, 2012 after living the first half of my life in California...and I have never before lived in snow! Share my adventures with me...and maybe fall in love with Taos too.

The PASEO 2016, an outdoor art event, will fill the streets of Taos Historic District on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 23 and 24, from 5:00 to 10:00 pm. "Be prepared so you can make the most of the few short hours you have to see 21 temporary, participatory and 100%-free artworks," advise PASEO co-directors, artist-educator Agnes Chavez and artist-architect, Matt Thomas. Here is their advice for navigating The PASEO 2016.

"When you arrive in Taos, start at one of the convenient PASEO Info Centers to pick up a map and PASEO Festival Program Guide. Or download the map and guide in advance from paseoproject.org. Then, set your mind to full-acceptance mode so you can experience all things new, different and unexpected, and keep your eyes open for the big orange PASEO X's that mark each art installation."

Become one with the art. Virtually all the PASEO art is participatory in some way. Your movement will light up, a nontraditional Navajo sand painting wired with LED lights. Feel free to protest, confess, pontificate then watch your words become part of the art – blasted onto short-wave FM radios or projected on to adobe walls. Other installations will recolor, resize and respond based on audience interactions.

Let your smartphone be your partner in The PASEO experience. Several installations use online integration and PASEO partner, LiveTaos.com, has developed a GPS-enabled map to all the installations. Don't forget to take pictures and post to Instagram: #paseotaos2016 and #newmexicotrue.

Wear your running shoes and bring your water bottle so you can sprint along with the moving art. Four roaming artworks will dance, cycle, or bring light and sound to hidden corners of the town.

Bring the kids, become a kid again doing special activities at Twirl Discovery Space and at a STEAM-inspired makers space set up outside The Toolbox on Civic Plaza Drive. Twelve of the 21 installations will include youth from Taos schools so your kids will see Taos kids participating in the art process.

Soak in silence. On the Plaza, dancers in high-tech headphones will move to the rhythms of three DJs. Their colored LEDs tell which channel they are grooving to, though the audience hears nothing. A surreal experience for the audience, all of whom are welcome to try on the headphones and enter the dance floor.

Italianos Trail Hike in Taos Ski Valley

Italianos Trail is one of my favorite hikes in Taos. Located on State Highway 150 on the way to the Taos Ski Valley, this trail is one of the most beautiful in Taos County. It is, in my opinion, one of the least difficult although there are numerous water crossings. The streams have water trails made with large rocks and logs and, providing you wear waterproof shoes and the snow melt is not too high (rarely happens), the crossings are pretty easy.

This hike is 3.6 miles long and increases in elevation from 8,704 to 11,387 feet. Click here for a map of Italianos Trail.

We have had a ton of rain in Taos this year which has resulted in lush green foliage and the most wildflowers I have ever seen on the trail. We hiked last week and I found myself snapping photo after photo of the beauty. A series of flowers, each with a bee, were some of my favorites.

This is a perfect hike for families, dogs (on leash) and less than expert hikers because the elevation changes gradually. Just please prepare properly with appropriate footwear, water, snacks,sunscreen, rain gear and snowshoes & jackets in winter. But, right now in summer, the trail is breathtaking. Just remember, if you are not used to our elevation, take it easy. You are starting at 8700 feet. It may take a while to catch your breath.

Taos Parade of Homes

This Saturday (July 11, 2015) is the first annual Taos Parade of Homes benefitting Habitat for Humanity of Taos. Explore Taos homes of distinction as you help build Taos!

The event is sponsored by TCAR (Taos County Association of Realtors) and The Taos News Enchanted Homes and features ten beautiful homes around Taos County. It also includes the 29th Habitat-built home in Taos along with delicious food, beautiful architecture, and a chance to win raffle prizes.

Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico is so much more than just a ski mountain. Rugged and remote, Taos is famous for its breathtaking scenery and the "legendary light" that has inspired artists like Georgia O'Keeffe. Taos has always had a sort of mystique about it. In 2013, billionaire Louis Bacon bought the mountain from its founders the Blake family, promising this lovably weathered mountain would get a "much-needed shot in the arm," as The New York Times put it. This year, a chair lift opened to Kachina Peak, which had previously only been accessible by a hike. Thirty-five acres of new tree skiing opened, too, and the village's ski lodge also got an upgrade. Ski Taos in the next 10 years to take advantage of these new developments, and also to experience the unique charm of the place while it lasts.
